Two routes to Fellowship

Fellowship may be reached in two ways. Both are assessed against the same standard by the College’s Fellowship Committee.

Who Fellowship is for

Applicants will normally be able to demonstrate:

• Registration & standing — registration with the GDC (or a recognised overseas regulator), and an established record of ethical clinical practice.
• Ten years in practice — at least ten years in clinical dental practice, with an established record of active implant practice over a sustained period, evidenced by a clinical logbook.
• A higher academic qualification — a university Master’s or doctorate specifically in implant dentistry or implantology (an MSc, MClinDent or PhD), or a comparable higher qualification at the Committee’s discretion. A recognised Diploma in implant dentistry — among them the EduQual Diploma in Implant Dentistry (SCQF Level 11) — is accepted alongside. A Diploma with only one of the two, the years or the higher qualification, is Associate Fellowship.
• Leadership — a senior clinical, practice or service-development role, or leadership within a hospital, university or referral service.
• Contribution to education — teaching, mentoring, lecturing, supervising, or developing training in implant dentistry.
• Innovation & advancement — new protocols or techniques, digital workflow, service development, clinical governance, or improved patient outcomes.
• Research & scholarship — welcomed and credited, but not mandatory: clinical excellence and professional contribution are not disadvantaged by a limited publication record.

Associate Fellowship (AFBCDIS)

For distinguished contribution to implant dentistry or to the College.

Associate Fellowship asks for a Diploma in implant dentistry recognised by the College, together with either ten years in clinical dental practice or a master’s degree or doctorate in implant dentistry. It is the grade for clinicians who have reached diploma level and one of Fellowship’s two further requirements, but not yet both — and for those whose contribution is real and evidenced while the full criteria are still ahead of them. It is reached by application or nomination, and assessed by the Fellowship Committee against the same standard of evidence.

How to apply

When applications open, candidates will submit a curriculum vitae, a personal statement, evidence of qualifications and contribution, and the names of two professional referees. Applications are reviewed by the College’s Fellowship Committee; candidates may be invited to interview. Full details and the application pack will be published here when the scheme opens.
