Fellowship of the British College of Dental Implant Surgery
Fellowship — the postnominal FBCDIS — recognises experienced clinicians who have demonstrated sustained excellence, leadership and contribution to the practice, education and advancement of implant dentistry.
Two routes to Fellowship
Fellowship may be reached in two ways. Both are assessed against the same standard by the College’s Fellowship Committee.
Progression
For Members of the College (MBCDIS) in good standing, who have built an established record in implant practice and can evidence their contribution through a portfolio.
Direct election
For established clinicians who have led within the profession — whether or not they came through the College’s own qualifications — and who meet the criteria below.
Who Fellowship is for
Applicants will normally be able to demonstrate:
- Registration & standing — registration with the GDC (or a recognised overseas regulator), and an established record of ethical clinical practice.
- Experience in implant dentistry — an established record of active implant practice over a sustained period, evidenced by a clinical logbook.
- An advanced qualification — the EduQual Diploma in Implant Dentistry (SCQF Level 11), a university Master’s in implant dentistry (such as an MSc or MClinDent), or a comparable qualification at that level (RQF Level 7 or above), at the Committee’s discretion.
- Leadership — a senior clinical, practice or service-development role, or leadership within a hospital, university or referral service.
- Contribution to education — teaching, mentoring, lecturing, supervising, or developing training in implant dentistry.
- Innovation & advancement — new protocols or techniques, digital workflow, service development, clinical governance, or improved patient outcomes.
- Research & scholarship — welcomed and credited, but not mandatory: clinical excellence and professional contribution are not disadvantaged by a limited publication record.
How to apply
When applications open, candidates will submit a curriculum vitae, a personal statement, evidence of qualifications and contribution, and the names of two professional referees. Applications are reviewed by the College’s Fellowship Committee; candidates may be invited to interview. Full details and the application pack will be published here when the scheme opens.
Foundation Fellows
Ahead of the inaugural awards, the Board is appointing a founding cohort of Foundation Fellows by invitation — senior clinicians who meet the Fellowship criteria — to constitute the first Fellowship Committee and welcome those who follow.
A note on what Fellowship is
Standing
Fellowship is an award of the College — not an academic qualification recognised for GDC registration — and does not confer specialist status, as the General Dental Council holds no specialist list in implant dentistry. The postnominal FBCDIS is used in accordance with the College’s guidance on using your postnominal and GDC guidance on ethical advertising.
Fellowship is more than a set of letters after your name: it is recognition by peers of sustained excellence, leadership and contribution to implant dentistry.
